Our May, 2006 Travelogue
May in the forest. We've been working at the Cradle of Forestry for a little over two weeks now, and the experievce has been very good. Some days are slow yet but the occasional school group gets things jumping from time to time. "Ranger Randy" has been a trail guide for a couple of 3rd grade groups. Boy do they have questions! Have you seen Big Foot? Are there bears here? Are there snakes here? (no, yes, yes).
At our elevation there (3300 feet) the trees are just now beginning to leaf out fully. In Brevard, 11 miles down the hill, the flowering shrubs are in full bloom already. We've been on a few hikes - 5 miles being about the longest - and are looking forward to more walks as time permits. Randy has finally been successful in catching a few trout in the Davidson River, so things are looking up in that regard. They are fussy about the flypattern being used!
Our volunteer group is great - we often get together in the clubhouse to play games, work on puzzles, or cook. We've had a pot luck dinner and MJ and Randy are cooking for about 36 people on Friday night for a cinco de mayo party - Yikes!
One interesting thing about the Cradle site and the Pisgah Forest is the abundance of wild flowers - so many and such a variety of colors. We even have some Swamp Pink blooming right now - a rare wild flower which is simply beautiful.
