Our favorite flower in the woods has to be the Flame Azalea, shown here with some Mountain Laurel. The flames appear throughout the woods and are just beautiful! A rest stop on out 7 mile hike from the Pisgah Inn. Pictured are Maddie, Andy, Walt, and Mary Jane.

June was a great flower month. Here is a lovely Purple Trillium out in the woods. There were also a great supply of Pink Ladyslippers, and many other flowers.
Some Mountain Laurel in full bloom. The buds are pink, and the flowers open pink and change to white as the mature. The individual flowers are very dainty and beautiful.
Mary Jane, Justin, and William at Bug Day at the Cradle of Forestry. Also our friend Gaye, and two student interns Shauna and Amanda.
Randy standing at the top of Looking Glass Rock. This was a 3.1 mile, 1600 foot climb. There is no real edge - it's a lava dome - the hilltop just gradually slopes to a straight drop.
Looking Glass Rock as seen from the Blue Ridge Parkway. Where Randy is standing is the top center of the main rock face. The climb comes up from the far side of the rock.
A Timber Rattler photo taken on the entrance road to the Cradle of Forestry. Randy spent hours looking for one that is near one of the trails, and then one day this one showed up about 50 yards from our rig. It is a beautiful animal!
