One issue we've faced while traveling is obtaining prescription drugs covered in our health plan. If you are like us, you have your prescriptions filled at a convenient. local, pharmacy where you live. When you hit the road, things change. One possible solution is to see if your pharmacy will fill your prescription online or by phone and mail it to you. This takes time, and adds mailing fees. Filling the prescription locally may not always work easily - especially if the pharmacy is not an "in plan" store. The solution we discovered works the best is - you guessed it - WalMart. They have a national computer network, so they can access your prescription information wherever you are. They are probably an approved pharmacy for your medical plan already - check on this first. There are mail order options available as well. The escapees offers a program (link) through a pharmacy in Livingston, TX. One more thing; with some prescriptions monitored by your doctor you cannot get a refill authorized for longer than six months or so without getting some blood tests, etc. done Be sure to discuss this with your doctor before hitting the road. You may, for example, need to get tests done and fax the results to the doctor in order to refill a prescription. We've done this at special low-cost health screening events in conjunction with the escapees annual Fall Escapade - their national rally. NOTE: This is not to be considered as medical advise. It is just our experiences. Check with your physician and/or insurance carrier. |
