| Packing Item | Things to consider |
| Storage containers |
In general, square is better than round. Most of the nooks and crannies in our motorhome lend themselves to square containers - not round ones. For example, sugar and flour containers should seal well, and be square. We located some plastic storage containers to place on shelves in our pantry - when looking for that elusive item it is easier to remove a plastic tub than a dozen cans. I think that basement storage containers are better to be flat and short than the large tubs with lids. The large tubs seem to have a severe taper to the sides - probably so they stack nicely for shipping and store displays. This costs you a lot of room, since most items you put into the containers are not tapered. Therefore you only have an effective space equal to the bottom of the container. In addition, the bottoms of the containers should be as flat as possible - sliding a heavy tub into the basement and having to fight the ridges on the container will cost you skun knuckles. We like the tubs with handles that serve as latches. They seem to keep dust, etc. out of the container, and the sit well on top of one another. |
| Bring a Suitcase | We have one suitcase - actually a carry-on bag that we have already found useful when Mary Jane flew from Texas to North Carolina to help her daughter for a couple weeks. When not in use, we load the suitcase with items in the basement and place it in a large garbage bag to keep the suitcase and its contents clean. |
| Folding Cooler | Our good friends Rich and Suzette gave us this really slick cooler which folds up into about a 18"X18"X4" package. Just great for the beach, or even when going to the grocery store in the Texas heat - not that we're complaining. It's easier to store than a large cooler. |
| We love Plastic Storage Bags | We love plastic storage bags of all sizes - the zip-locking kind - in sandwhich and gallon sizes. We store dry food ingredients in them (salt, sugar, flour, etc.) We use them to store matches, left-overs, cookies, tank chemicals, and dryer sheets, We use them to marinate meat and vegies in. And we use them for loose parts for the motor home - you know - the parts you find on the floor. Get the picture? They are very handy. Bring lots. |
| Labels Rule! | It's really hard to understand how you can lose stuff in a 102" X 34' motor home - but you can. We use labels a lot; tape labels on storage containers and sticky notes inside cupboard doors for example. It helps when you need to get that can of green beans out of a narrow deep cupboard shelf. They also work as a perpetual inventory system if you cross an item off the list when you use it. |
