Tips for water conservation while boondocking.

The tips presented below are in no particular order, and they are intentionally brief. We think that just a few words will get the point across.

Water conservation involves three things. 1 - Not using water if possible. 2 - Using as little water as possible. 3 - Re-using water when you can. The ideas below follow these three basic notions.

Not using water if possible:

  • Waterless hand cleaner.
  • Waterless shampoo - available from health care stores and on ebay.
  • Waterless body wash - available from health care stores and on ebay.
  • Waterless wipes - as seen at gas stations, etc.

Using as little water as possible:

  • Install low-flow shower heads with shut-off valves.
  • Use a spray bottle to moisten toilet bowl before use and after flushing.
  • Use a bowl or pan in sink for rinsing dishes.
  • Some folks heat water and do dishes outside.
  • Use facial tissues to remove food/grease from dishes and pans.

Re-using water where possible:

  • Collect cold water (shower & sink) while waiting for hot water flow. Use for dishes.
  • Use rinse water from dishes to flush toilet.
