Tips about packing your RV. Here are some essential items to bring along.
We'll be expanding this list as we think of items.
| Now that we have been on the road for over two years we plan to invoke the "If you have not used it in two years get rid of it rule". |
| Essential Items |
Why they are essential |
|
Clothes and footwear.
|
| Clothes that allow you to dress in layers. |
With closet space at a premium, do not bring bulky
winter clothing unless, of course, your plans include being in cold places - ours
do not. We've been there. A tee shirt, long sleeve shirt, sweater, and jacket
can be used in many different types of weather, and added all together equal a
bulky winter jacket. Include rain gear. Don't forget gloves, and hats or caps
for rain, sun, and cold. A pair of old shoes are handy when washing the rig, or
when the weather sucks. Shower flops or water shoes are handy for shower, beach,
or sitting around. |
| Kitchen items we find very handy. |
One thing to make sure you have is a set of nesting mixing bowls. We just got a set of plastic bowls at Walmart. Stainless steel bowls would work also work well. We have WAY too many knives. A good chefs knife and plastic cutting boards are essential. We also use a serrated utility knife a lot, and a serrated bread knife. A fillet knife is also handy. We use a whisk fairly often. We carry a large mixer simply because we own one - it was expensive and is probably overkill - but if you need the power it is there. |
| Very handy tools to have (see below as well) |
I have enough tools on board to equip a small auto garage - most do not get used. There are some essentials. Bring both 1/4" and 3/8" drive sets. I also have a 1/2" set that mostly gets used to check the fluid level in the differential (which accepts a 1/2" square drive). Get a qood set of screw drivers in different sizes. A battery powered drill is nice - get a long extension for those hard to reach places. A mirror and a magnet on a telescoping handle would be handy - RV's have a lot of hard to reach places, and you will always drop a screw or not where you can not see or reach it. |
| Organizing tools |
I have three toolboxes - which seems to work out well. I have one box that is the plumbing, electrical, sheet metal box. In it are things like fuses, bulbs, wire, crimpers, pop rivets, etc. I have another box which is for serious tools - 1/2" drive set, hack saw, files, etc. I also have a third box which is a canvas bag that is kept in the first bin by the door. This contains vice grips, screw drivers, hex wrenches, and a few other items found by experience to be needed frequently. Oh, some tools seem to migrate naturally into the house - so you might as well designate an area in a drawer someplace for them. It will happen. |
